The return of jahiliyah —Razi Azmi.
|I know Razi sahib means well and did not intend to perpetuate any Islamist stereotypes, but its about time we start mentioning that the whole notion that there was a period of extreme ignorance and evil called “Jahiliyah” is itself a fantasy created by later Islamic writers to make the advent of islam look even more impressive. In actual fact, pre-Islamic Arabia, while it was riven with feuds and disunity, was otherwise not devoid of honor or character or egalitarian self-esteem and self-respect. In fact, early Islamicate civilization itself acquired many of its better characteristics from exactly those strengths of character, egalitarianism and rough independence that were a feature of the nomadic Arabs before Islam moulded them into a united force…In fact, one can argue that nothing really arises fully formed out of nothing. Islam itself is a product of that pre-Islamic society and its creditable achievements should reflect positively upon the poverty stricken but hardy and independent and practical minded Arabs of the so-called Jahiliya….
