Courtesy of Reason online, here’s DC’s Ward 8 representative Marion Barry on why he singled out asian-owned businesses in his election-victory speech. Spoken by a bloke of any other hue, this would be received as the mark of an incorrigible and unreconstructed racist. Taken to its logical conclusions in about 6-800 words in a small political website, it might’ve even attracted its own internet storm of self-righteous fury. Would Marion care to venture that there’s a ‘cultural’ difference as to why, according to him, 95% of carry-out restaurants in Ward 8 are run by Asians? Ultimately, what’s the difference between Marion and Michalis Karakostas, of Greek political party Golden Dawn, who woos voters by advising, ““If Pakistanis squat your front door, call me, not the cops.”
A society predicated on revenge, vigilante ‘justice’ and the delegation of power to multiple sociopolitical tribes by a common conception of life–that the value can be measured only by social status–is poor, violent and backward. Greece is a putative first world country unless you consider the events of the past few years and that their Eurostat numbers may be as reliable as what Argentina has been self-reporting after the collapse of their currency. It has quite a distance to go in order to fall to the level of South Asia although the efforts of Karakostas may yet hasten that process. Washington D.C., in micro, shows spots of such emergent barbarism and Marion Berry’s continued success is a leading indicator.
