While India enjoys power cuts (and shows that it is not as far away from Pakistan as it would like to be), the Pakistani media stays one step ahead of the pack. An engineer (I have heard that he is a “diploma engineer”..an associate degree, not a full engineering degree) has claimed to invent a car that runs on water. He seems to have fabricated the kind of “water-kit” found all over youtube, where someone uses electrolysis to split water into oxygen and hydrogen, then uses the hydrogen as fuel. So far so good, but until now there is no way to get more energy out of such a system than you put into it..Waqar Ahmed claims to have solved that problem.
How? interestingly he doesnt even seem to understand the question when he is asked about this. His grasp of physics seems to be at the 5th grade level and after one look, one can rule out the possibility that this is a new Einstein or Newton who has figured out a revolutionary way to split water without even using solar energy. But this is Pakistan, so the media and the paknationalist blogosphere have gone nuts.
Check out Talat, probably Pakistan’s number two anchor at this time. Poor Atta ur Rahman tries his best, but to no avail. btw, Engineer Waqar and Talat spend a few minutes discussing how he is not a Sindhi engineer, he is a Pakistani. Paknationalism is heavily fused with this fantasy.
On Twitter and facebook and various websites, people are celebrating this as Allah’s gift to Pakistan during Ramadan, while speculating that “international capitalists” and the agents of oil companies may try to kill the inventors very soon. There are demands to provide security and the cabinet has officially met to observe this miracle (NOT kidding) and the ministry of science and technology has moved a “summary” to initiate production of “water-kits” to change existing cars to this technology.
Former science minister Dr Atta ur Rahman has bravely tried to stem the tide of nonsense by pointing out that the laws of thermodynamics rule out perpetual motion machines, but Dr Qadeer Khan (father of the Islamic bomb and national hero) steps forward to defend the inventor (see from 5 minute mark onward..he says that Readers Digest wrote many years ago that apparently ridiculous inventions may turn out to be true and one can easily see that there is no gas tank in this great man’s car, so the proof is already here…I am NOT kidding).
If Hollywood made a movie like this they would be instantly accused of traficking in orientalist stereotypes; depicting Pakistani scientists and media personalities and the bloody cabinet as fools and/or charlatans. Real life, once again, proves more interesting than fiction.
So, hive-mind, what do you think is the scam here? Do the “inventors” actually believe they have created a perpetual motion machine? if not (and its hard to believe that they can be deluding themselves so thoroughly) then what is the scam? how do they expect to get away with it?
Oh wait, there is more. In this clip, the chairman of the Pakistan Council of Scientific and Industrial Research certifies that the car indeed works as claimed.
I can’t stop. Here at the 6-50 mark onwards, the moron asks Dr Atta ur Rahman “do you know where hydrogen comes from”? Atta ur Rahman tries to explain that commercially its usually produced from methane. Said moron then laughs at Pakistan’s most prominent living scientist and exposes his immense ignorance and limitless idiocy…Oh lord.
IN case you are wondering where diploma bhai got his “technology”, wonder no more:
Naturally, the amazing Randi has been on this case (5 years ago): http://forums.randi.org/showthread.php?t=100695
The seventies show was on this case (hat tip Shabbir Siddique
Not to be left behind, here is MQM chief Altaf Hussain hailing this scientific revolution
it gets better and better. Pakistan’s ambassador to UAE has invited him to Abu Dhabi to demonstrate this scientific breakthrough.
The inventor has demanded that the govt switch all power stations to water-fuel using his water-kit. He has also accused the govt of being non-serious about saving energy.
but have no fear, the Chairman of the Pakistan Science Foundation (I am not kidding) has endorsed this invention and stood by the inventor as he announced that he is suing Dr Atta ur Rahman (former head of the HEJ Chemistry institute, with 800 plus publications) for trying to undermine his invention by quoting the laws of thermodynamics to him on TV.
You cannot make this stuff up.
best response so far
Oh mythbusters, why?
This great mujahid got angry at Dr Atta ur Rahman (for “insulting a Muslim who has made a good invention”)..at 3 minute mark he states: “Dr Atta said this device is running on battery and battery will run down in half an hour. Dr Atta is obviously not an engineer so he does not seem to understand that the car has an alternator to charge the battery..” #Facepalm Jebus, call me up now. Please end this torture. Please. #fasterpussycatfaster
Blogger Shahid Saeed has taken the time to lay out the energy in and energy out figures. It shouldnt even be necessary to go this far, but seeing the above, it obviously IS necessary. http://dawn.com/2012/08/03/bad-science/
