11 year old girl with Down Syndrome in prison for blasphemy

Oh Lord. Now this http://tribune.com.pk/story/424084/11-year-old-mentally-challenged-christian-girl-jailed-for-blasphemy/

11 years old? Down Syndrome? Beaten. Jailed.

Really?

Though an optimist might wish to point out that she was not killed, the village was not burned down and the parliamentary secretary for human rights has promised to help her. It could be worse. We could still be part of India.

  1. People are bullies all over the world. But Pakistanis are especialy bad at this, I agree the ideology taught in schools makes it worse in Pakistan than in a normal country like Mexico or Taiwan.

    • A humane society is always judged by how it treat its weakest. Incidentally I saw a 1950′s Mexican Sci-fi film yesterday as part of a Tex-Mex Latin London festival.

The racial hierarchy, even in black and white television, was incredible. The heroine looked like Sophia Loren, the villain had a slightly mestizo look and his henchman were Indios (the graveyard keeper was a full Indian tribesman). I guess it’s a faithful representation of Latin American society but I do have a new-found respect the Anglosphere’s constant soul searching on minorities, race and class.

This young girl fits almost every definition of being the most vulnerable in Pakistan society; young, poor, disable, a girl and a religious minority.

This is in contrast to Britain where the upcoming Paralympics is the first ever going to be sold out. I’m really proud of Britain’s commitments (wish I could say the same for Pakistan) to enabling all members of society to compete at the highest level. I was told the Paralympics was founded by a Holocaust refugee in Britain, who was a celebrated neuro-surgeon and later knighted for his efforts.

Jewish people go on making the world a better place; I wish I could say the same for our Muslim brethren.

      Eid Mubarak.

      • We noticed something similar during our travels through Mexico. For example, the waiters would look native american while the maitre d would look more European. Lower ranking policemen would look native american while higher ranking officers were more European. In fact we rarely came across a well to do or powerful Mexican who didn’t look European. This was in 2009!!

    • Assuming everything in Omar’s link is true as reported – you haven’t given us any reason to doubt it – how does this become bullying? This is gross insult over injury. Equally bizarre is citing Mexico or Taiwan as an example of a normal country.

        • pakistan, mexico, taiwan – narcotics trafficking, drug- money laundering. alfred w. mccoy, peter dale scott, gary webb.

raise your hand if you know of the infamous BCCI that had head offices in karachi and london…

it’s quite silly to talk of “normal” countries.

  2. If these religious books are so precious then why are they being found by non-muslims all the time.
Are kids taught to burn books. I thought only religious zealots burned books and effigies.
Are these school textbooks that a christian girl would have in her possession.
Burning books is bad but Burning people isn’t. Aren’t they being hindus when they burn these bodies.
At least on the bright side, once all minorities are out of the way, burning of books won’t be a problem anymore.

  3. BBC had report today in which they interviewed the eye witness who
reported to authority. he said he say girl throwing garbage which contained papers. some pages were burned were from Quran.
Christian family was renting a shack from him.

It seems Islam has greater protection for Adultery than Blasphemy.
