Sid & Kabir have a low-level exchange going on about Pakistan (what else) and it’s “invadeability”:
It’s pretty obvious that Islamic and African countries (those with fairly significant Muslim populations) dominate the US Aid list. Interestingly enough in the 2012 Aid Figure not a single country taht features, has a Muslim population of less than 10% (Kenya is the lowest at 11.2%). Personally I think the Aid (like all Aid) is fairly misdirected and actually more a relic of Cold War policies (focus on the Levant etc) than the current Geo-strategic environment.
How important is the “Ummah” to World Affairs? From the perspective of US Aid priorities (of course the question also remains whether the aid is reflective of geopolitical concerns of humanitarian ones; I would suggest a 70-30% split?) it seems crucially important though I would hazard that Greater “Indo-China” rather than “PakAsia” should dominate Western worries in the century to come.
As for PakAsia, if the BP threads are anything to go by Indians and Pakistanis just cannot see eye to eye (from my limited experience as a Brit-Paks I don’t see compatriots storming threads decrying our other neighbors in the Greater Middle East), it seems an inevitability.
There is just too much disagreement on the Indo-Pak side (the Indians may wish us to be their fraternal brothers forever but why not focus on the other lost shard, Bangladesh, and don’t go around whipping up hysteria about 10mn “illegal” Bangladeshis and then pine for Pakistan rejoining Akhand Bharat) but as we can see from the below map, AfPak is fast becoming a de facto reality.
Who can take over Afghanistan once the US has left? The Taliban are already primed for the Pashtun areas outside Fortress Kabul.
Finally the map above shows that painfully divided part of Pakistan in a foreign land. If India cannot even manage a handful of Sunni Kashmiris what chance does it really have influencing PakAsia apart from soft economic & Bollywood power?
The maps & graphs are clear; for all it’s Fuckedupness Pakistan is here to stay and is a valuable lynch-pin (as opposed to an all evil entity as imagined cross-border). The collective idea should be to Rehabilitate Pakistan and move it towards a healthier, more stable society (even as the march toward prosperity continues apace).
There are simply too many fundamental Indo-Pak disagreements for us to ever try a meaningful political alignment. If Muslim burning temples a thousand years ago is held against us let us agree now to Partition the term “Brown” now, we will fly to the Ummah on the TNT powered remnants of Babri Masjid and you can keep those burning Buddhist grievances against those awful Mughal Mauzlems, who we happen to call our ancestors.
If Hindutva continues apace how long will it be before the Pakistan people will join the RuppeeNews-led chorus:
Fly us to the Ummah
Let us pray among those PakAsian statelets
Let us see what Sajdah is really like
In Jeddah and Medina
In other words, Wahabi, slice off our heathen hand
In other words, Babri, veil our hindu land
Fill our heavy hearts with Allama Iqbal
And let us sing for ever more
Ummah is all we long for
All we worship and adore
In other words, Pakistan be true
In other words, long before Amir, Akbar & TNT
Why did you fill our hindu hearts with the Sunnah?
Lest we Shariah forever more
For India was once all we longed for
All we worshiped and adored
In other words, Pakistan be true
In other words
In other words, India, we even loved you.
