South Asian fail in Congo

I have long been annoyed by a sort of moral preening among certain South Asians about their “noble” service in UN peacekeeping missions. Here we see little has been learned from the Sarajevo massacre, as yet again, UN troops stand aside and let Goma fall to the rebels.

Of course, one could argue that the Rwanda-backed rebels will be for the best in the long-term, but this is distinctly not the UN mission.

This time most of the UN troops are from India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. Fail.

  1. These peace-keeping troops under the UN don’t really have much of a mandate. I woudn’t blame their ineffectiveness in this case on the quality of the subcontinent soldiers. Its the toothlessness of the UN mission and which is highlighted in all such cases. they get in their without much planning or local knowledge with only a weak sense of a humanitarian misison and its not surprising to see them twiddling their thumbs while more determined locals who have some stake in the situation (economic and otherwise) do their thing.

    • Yeah, it is probably more of a UN failure, but I am tired of this “noble” schtick by the various South Asian armies who basically do these deployments for the $$.

      • As an MBA student you surely are not confortable with embellishing facts and putting a positive spin on sundry things you do. :P

Have you not yet attended any resume writing sessions?

        • Good resumes IMHO are stories that have a hook otherwise the flood of resumes gets insane.

Btw a decade ago I would assess how well someone had done by the job they had now in these trying times simply having a job is a measure of success in itself. Recession woes.

Wait we’re going off-topic; Pakis in Congo hmm.. My personal opinion the mob’a gonna get you sooner or late so join the mob..

          • Right-it’s scary out there. I would not have sought out my MBA in these circumstnces but for my firm is paying for it and wanted me to do it. Law school is even crazier these days-see insidethelawschoolscam.blogspot.com

  2. You should also factor in the racial ideas of Indian and Pakistani army staff (superior to Blacks and Srilankan Tamils) due to taller(?) and fairer; aslo, I would like to question why you think that they would have succeeded if they had attempted to prevent the fall of Goma? What will Pavo Cavalry say on all this? You should get him as a contributor.
