Brown Pundits, big in India!

I’ve mentioned this before, but I’ll reiterate something I’ve noticed recently: this website is getting bigger and bigger in India. More precisely, though traffic is increasing in the USA, traffic is increasing from Indian IPs even faster.

Here is the breakdown for the last month:

Country % Users
United States 35%
India 29%
UK 6%
Canada 5%
Pakistan 5%
Australia 2%
Germany 1%
France 1%
UAE 1%
Bangladesh 1%

In terms of where the traffic is coming from, the map above shows the cities.

I’m of two feelings about this.

  1. This is going to cause issues because of cultural differences. Educated Indians speak English, but norms and idioms differ. In general, my personal strategy is to hegemonically impose American norms.
  2. Over the past few years I have become bearish on the United States, and bullish on India and China. I’m very curious what people in Asia think, because I think the Asian future is coming at us more quickly than I’d anticipated just a few years ago (American decline, rather than Asian ascension being a cause).

Hello Zachary Latif,

Big fan here! (Fan of all posters of this site). Yes, the places are all just mundane urban centres and capital cities within India and even Kerala does not fail to show the nature of its decentralised urbanisation (townification? if that’s a word) with a number of moderate-sized-ish circles.

Slightly surprised that Bangalore leads the readership in India, wondering if Delhi numbers are disaggregated and hence under-accounted for, there are lots of bubbles within that bubble.

Given the ordering of cities and the insignificance of Calcutta, I’d guess the readership draws on lots of people from the IT industry.

The IT people’s invasion of Brown Pundits is what I instantly imagined too. While probably being a bit on the lower side of nuance and detail? But IT is what majorly differentiates Bengaluru from many other cities though, like you mentioned.

IT/science invasion is to be preferred. We already have enough places for humanities, this can be the niche of BP. tech/science/business.

Will you post in detail on this topic?

I agree with American decline and Chinese ascent, but would differ on India. My opinion on any given day of India’s potential rise follows a sawtooth curve- rising steadily, then falling abruptly when I visit India. In addition, (1) India’s failure to define (even try to define) its own Internet sphere like China is further cause for pessimism, and (2) constant warfare between Hindutva & “secular” Hindus on nature of the state will cause repetitive U-turns and limit growth over time. I think India will grow, maybe even catch up with US total GDP in PPP, but will likely fall into a lower-middle-income trap. I’ll be glad to be proved wrong.

Those that do matter have no interest in proving you wrong.

True. I was referring though for time to prove me wrong.

I think I’m largely responsible for the 5% from Pakistan 🙂
