I really don’t want to have this discussion on Harappa Project, so I am posting this comment by Nirjhar here:

Seeing these admixtures one may say “what is the basis of caste then?, the caste system was a failed system as for stopping mingling”
I know many who are seeing this site may had thoughts like that.
My answer to them is that though caste systems is expired now as a rule of prakiti but it never meant by your skin colour or background but by one thing ability. thats why greeks, jews were inducted as brahmins thats why huns, kushans were inducted as kshatriyas. Wherever we see a dominant culture we see the older or facing culture being erased but for the aryas from sapta sindh caste made every to get their position according to their ability but the rigid caste system we consider now is the system from the dark ages(19th-18th century) every culture had their dark ages but thats not their true identity is it?

Seriously, the caste system was in reality a meritocratic system?

And what’s with the dark ages and true identity? Does he also want to return to 7th century Arabia?

This is just a random list of things bugging me right now.

There are a lot of school kids in our neighborhood. A lot go to school by bus. At our bus stop, there are probably 20-25 children every morning. Almost all walk to the stop from their home (100-300 yards). Except 3-4 families. They drive their minivans for 30 seconds. The connection to this blog: They are all Indian. Now there are parents who drive their kids to school instead of getting them on the bus and there the pattern is not so overwhelmingly Desi.

I read this Muslim American declaration on 10th anniversary of Sept 11 and it sounds really odd to me. Oh we are normal, patriotic people and let me repeat that a dozen times, sounds weird. And fake.

Finally, what was so special about Ahmed Shah Massoud that some people in the West valorize him? He was just another barbarian warlord in war-torn Afghanistan. Does being better than Hekmatyar really count for so much?

ADDED: Why is the military being honored in 9/11 anniversary statements?

Based on my observation of my Indian peers in the US (those about my age with young children and came to the US in 1990s-2000s), their children (born and being raised in the US) are usually much taller than the parents. I do not see the same pattern among Pakistani Americans.

Admittedly this is just anecdotal data, so I would appreciate if someone could point out any paper on the topic.

While searching for information, I did find that Indian height grew less than 0.5in from the generation who were adults in 1980 to those who were born in 1980 (PDF link to paper). However, I am looking at a later generational difference: Children born in the last decade compared with their parents.

A Nature paper shows how short Indian teens were in the 1990s.

To confuse you guys, Razib and Zachary have invited me to contribute. Now it’ll be a Zack-fest here and you will never figure out if it was Zack or Zach.

As our resident brown expert will tell you, neither Zack nor Zach are brown names. But I don’t care for the habit of most browns to give their kids brown names which then have to be shortened to western nicks.

I have been blogging at Procrastination for a long time, though it’s a little dormant nowadays A’s most of my spare time is used up in the Harappa Ancestry Project.
