South Asian Height Trends

Posted By on August 20, 2011

Based on my observation of my Indian peers in the US (those about my age with young children and came to the US in 1990s-2000s), their children (born and being raised in the US) are usually much taller than the parents. I do not see the same pattern among Pakistani Americans.

Admittedly this is just anecdotal data, so I would appreciate if someone could point out any paper on the topic.

While searching for information, I did find that Indian height grew less than 0.5in from the generation who were adults in 1980 to those who were born in 1980 (PDF link to paper). However, I am looking at a later generational difference: Children born in the last decade compared with their parents.

A Nature paper shows how short Indian teens were in the 1990s.

I’ve cited this before it’ll bear a repetition – Sumantra Bose at the LSE http://www.fathom.com/course/10701013/index.html

I heard that last week 12 armed infiltrators were killed by Indian troops–6 shot and 6 drowned. Sad commentary on the state of affairs that this didn’t get much coverage.

Yesterday they had both Salahuddin and Hafiz Saeed on TV too; either they are trying to raise their negotiating price or they are up for another round…in either case, some increase in such incidents seems likely.
