"Liberal pakistani" is a contradiction. 2 "liberals" Pakistani ideologues defended and praised the killer of an inncocent man, what do you expect from the state which celebrates them as founders. In fact it is 3 liberals when you add M.D. Taseer who organized the funeral of the murderer. Who was MDTaseer ? he was the father of Salman Taseer who was killed by his bodygaurd in 2015 for being sympathetic to a woman accused of blaspemy

So can we assume that “Rangila Rasool” was one of the major triggers for the conceptualization of Pakistan as M. A. Jinnah was the defense lawyer of the murderer of the author, and Mohd. Iqbal read an eulogy at the convict’s funeral, thereby sowing the seeds of the demand for a separate Muslim state?

The existence of the law is only one part of the problem. The law by itself may come into play only in prominent cases like a Salman Rushdie it. Taslima Nasreen affair. The real issue is the weaponization of the law by religious activist groups. They train the people to feel ‘hurt’ in a fundamentally different way to a normal feeling of hurt a person may feel when something fear to them is demeaned. They are motivated to riot and/or use the law. Coupled with sitting duck objects of hate like Ahmedias, I am sure cases of deliberate entrapment also will happen. Not to mention misuse of the law also – like say, in a dispute with a neighbour. Thus weaponization of the law is more dangerous than the law itself. You can eee similar weaponization in India in different laws like anti-dowry laws, or anti- SC/ST atrocities related laws.

The worst manifestation of the inability to correct error is the belief that there is none, which is basically what the “blasphemy meme” polices. I certainly won’t advise people to bring up kids in a place where beliefs of infallibility are rampant / totemic.

Islamic world esp Pakistan – created for Islam- is stuck with this cancer for a long time. There was a chance that Ataturk’s Turkey or even Nasser’s Egypt would provide Muslim countries would provide a way out of this. Anyhow it was Ataturk’s vision, and Nasser vision got defeated as Islamists have managed to survive through the cracks in the international power relations and have been protected and energised by one super power or another . Few decades back it was the USA which gave succour to Islamists in the Cold War, soon Russia or China would give the same to return the compliments to the US and Western Alliance
