Pervez Hoodbhoy is a personal friend of my parents.

While he criticizes many things about Pakistan, he is also no fan of “Hindu Hriday Samrat” or of Hindutva. He is consistently against religious majoritarianism in any form.

Despite its flaws, India has a higher tolerance for dissent than Pakistan. I have no problem admitting this on the record.

The question of who is Pakistan’s Arundhati Roy is an interesting one. Pervez Hoodbhoy openly criticizes Quaid-e-Azam and the “Two Nation Theory”. He’s not in jail.

I have immense respect for Arundhati Roy. She is truly a public intellectual.

She speaks truth to power and has never given an inch on Hindu nationalism. She has publicly called for Kashmir to be freed from India.
