In a way writing is an odd beast it has to become a daily habit
As I’m sure everyone has noticed, I am no longer commenting on BP.
It mostly came down to disrespect. I don’t like being the object of the daily “ten minute hate”. I don’t think it is acceptable to focus inordinately on one person to the point of bullying.
Also, this site is inordinately focused on India-Pakistan issues. It is clear to me that certain people come here only to fight with Pakistanis (when it’s not me it may as well be Q).
It is sad in a way that BP has lost almost all the Pakistani voices it had. Also, there is no longer a Sri Lankan voice. But, it’s fine. It just reflects that most of the commentariat is made of right-wing Indians. To expect Pakistanis to engage with such people and put up with their abuse is unrealistic.
For what it’s worth, I think the “Gender Precedent” is misplaced. If a female commenter wants to be disrespectful to a male commenter, she should be prepared to get disrespect back in return. It is not “feminism” to disrespect a man and then hide behind one’s own gender when one receives pushback.
Also, if gender is a protected category, than sexuality should also be one. I have received quite vile homophobic abuse on this site before.
