Nokia, Ericsson, Airtel, and the big boys club resisting India’s 5Gi
Though one of the world’s biggest telecom markets, India didn’t even have a proper telecom standards body of its own till 2016. Then, against all odds, it managed to come up with a new standard to increase the range of a 5G base station 4-5X. Not only would this standard, called “Low Mobility Large Cell” (LMLC), allow operators to boost the range of telecom networks in India’s vast rural and semi-urban areas, it would also increase the battery life of mobile phones.
By 2019, India managed to gatecrash the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), the UN body overseeing the development of new 5G standards. LMLC got included in the specs and even got a moniker: 5Gi.
So far, so good.
Next, India tried to get its new standard accepted by the 3GPP, the global telecom standards super-body that decides the standards vendors finally implement. Sadly, India got stonewalled there.
“5Gi is not part of 3GPP and there will not be any interoperability between 5G and 5Gi any time soon—if ever,” says Joe Barrett, president of the Global mobile Suppliers Association (GSA), in an emailed response to The Ken in today’s story.
This means that 5Gi got stuck in the twilight zone between standards and adoption. Since LMLC isn’t part of core 5G, vendors have the option to include (or exclude) it.
Reliance Jio supports 5Gi. Bharti Airtel doesn’t. Neither do big telecoms vendors such as Nokia and Ericsson. Qualcomm, Mediatek, and Samsung are sitting on the fence.
Will India’s indigenisation efforts lead to a Balkanization of telecom standards? Or is this just a bogey used to shut out a scrappy and efficient newcomer?
Anecdotally, I’ve noticed that Indians tend to get chubby at much higher rates than East Asians despite being poorer. Indian cuisines, who tend to be delicious, are also heavy on carbs, so that doesn’t help. This is perhaps inevitable as India grows richer: it will also get fatter.
All the more reason to break the chains of sedentary lifestyles, which starts by breaking the stranglehold that the car has over urban policy. India seems to be aping North America rather than Europe in terms of having a car-centric mindset. Cars should by and large be banned from major cities with massive bicycle infra investment and public transportation replacing it.
“Cars should by and large be banned from major cities with massive bicycle infra investment and public transportation replacing it.”
Most cities in India unfortunately do not have the climate for bicycling.
(I know. I used to bike to-and-fro 12km each side to work in Delhi. Not sustainable. And definitely not safe considering the state of traffic.)
What we can have are car free zones within cities. I doubt, though, if this will ever receive approval from the well-off sections of the society.
“India seems to be aping North America rather than Europe in terms of having a car-centric mindset.”
This is dependent on policy but is also a function of population density and built-up area. Mumbai and Kolkata for example have less total distance travelled in personal vehicles than smaller cities like Ahmedabad and Pune.
What we can have are car free zones within cities. I doubt, though, if this will ever receive approval from the well-off sections of the society.
Yes, this is a major problem here too. My country has a major automotive ecosystem, and they lobbied heavily in the 1950s to make the capital much more car-oriented. As a result, plenty of old buildings were wrecked and bulldozed in favor of wide highways crisscrossing the city. Once people have invested huge sums into cars, it becomes an albatross of “sunk costs”. People living in cities don’t like being told their investments were unwise due to regulatory changes, even if those changes are ultimately for the long-term betterment of society.
It’s a very delicate political question, but Paris serves as an inspiration, I think. Their mayor announced the concept of a “15 minute city” where everything you need should be available within a 15 minute walk. They’ve also decided to drastically cut the amount of cars being allowed into the center with a long-term vision of putting it close to zero. France has a very strong automotive ecosystem, so the mayor was able to push this through despite loud protests from them. Obviously most rich people in France live in Paris, so that was also an additional speedbump.
Most cities in India unfortunately do not have the climate for bicycling.
(I know. I used to bike to-and-fro 12km each side to work in Delhi. Not sustainable. And definitely not safe considering the state of traffic.)
The weather is very hot in India right now, but there are areas of India where it’s sustainable (e.g. Bangalore) for most of the year. In other areas, public transportation should be the default option, but obviously much more options need to be provided and the metro systems are lagging behind. Agree with you on the state of ´traffic, but this is a chicken-and-egg problem. It’s not easy to solve this until you invest upfront into cycle infra, that makes it possible for more people to cycle. Otherwise nobody but the bravest (including you, apparently) will dare make the trip.
Mumbai and Kolkata for example have less total distance travelled in personal vehicles than smaller cities like Ahmedabad and Pune.
That seems plausible, given what I’ve seen and read about Mumbai’s notorious traffic jams. I’ll take a look at the report you linked later today.
Update. I’ve now read the report that Prats linked to. Some of the findings surprised me:
Kolkata is the single best city in terms of *per trip* emissions, with Mumbai a near second. This is not due to the coastal climate, as it only looks at emissions, irrespective of easy it is to disperse those emissions. Mumbai has a very high GDP per capita but Kolkata obviously does not, so this isn’t about money either.
For whatever reasons, those two cities have had more enlightened leadership. The worst major city is Hyderabad, with Delhi scoring badly too. The report stresses that Kolkata’s success is not only due to lots of public transportation but also a compact city design. Plenty of highways being built in Indian cities can and should be abolished, and make room for more buildings. FSI should also be raised.
A last little fact I stumbled upon. The report mentions that an auto-rickshaw has 46(!) times more emissions per trip than a bus. My only complaint was that the report didn’t focus much on bicycling, but there’s room for improvement in subsequent editions.
Among the striking conclusions of the Paul-Sridhar book is that the North-South divergence is a relatively recent affair. In fact, hard though it may be to believe now, back in 1960 the incidence of rural poverty was higher in Tamil Nadu than in Uttar Pradesh. The South began to do better than the North only from the 1980s, with the gap accelerating from the 1990s onwards.
The article notes that the gap between TN and UP used to be quite modest (around 30% in favour of TN) but has now increased to 300%. Lack of convergence between Indian states is a problem, for it will mean an ever-growing migrant exodus towards the Southern states from the Gangetic plain, and we’re already seeing a rise of local jobs quotas.
I also often see Southern Indians complain that Northern migrants don’t bother learning local languages either. If these dual trends persist, would we start seeing Brexit-type movements arising in the South?
This is a slightly misleading argument. Both TN and UP were overwhelmingly agrarian in the 1960s. TN, as a region with physical water scarcity was always a harder place to practice agriculture in, despite larger per capita land holdings.
But the key point is TN had Chennai, developed extensively by the Raj, and its peasant castes like the Nadars had been moving into the capitalist system via the pumps and hydraulics industry. This political and social history is the pre cursor for TN becoming the automobile hub of India, a key reason for its relative prosperity today. Even in agriculture, large scale irrigation projects turned its larger in area farm holdings almost as productive per hectare as those in water rich UP.
Once a modicum of modern industry was established, TN had the revenue surpluses to invest substantially in health and education.
south gets mostly construction labour and at times some unskilled labour from north. i have been in the construction industry in bangalore, and the north indian labour do tend to learn and use the local language if they stay a bit longer. the locals are not interested in these kinds of jobs and they do not resent the northern labour. the problem at times is that the north indian labour practice the type of violence seen in north india which makes the locals scary.
ironically, there is resentment in the middle classes who see their north indian colleagues not making a modicum of effort to learn the local language.
I think the time for Brexit type movement in the South was in the eras following 47 (just like it happened with Pakistan-Bangladesh) . Now the South is sufficiently configured with India to really break away. Never say never, but to me state sponsored Dravidian/Communism is being countered with Union lead Indian/Hinduism.

Geneticist Gyaneshwar Chaubey has posted a plot on Twitter showing the distribution of haplogroups among males exclusively belonging to Brahmin gotras.
The plot shows that some Gotras have maintained a strict endogamy along founder lines. The Saryuparin Vasisth are exclusively H1 while the Gargs are exclusively R1a.
Overall H1, R1a and R2 (in that decreasing order) contribute almost 76% of the assessed haplogroups to the 21 gotras.
The motto of the New York Times used to be (maybe it still is) “print all the news that is fit to print”. While all of your other headlines meet that standard easily, I’m not sure that this one does.

Problem is. ALL Indians in US politics only want the failed socialism that they have escaped when they decided to move US. Not that because it’s good. Because that’s Obama Democracratic party wants and that’s easier to win election. Hand out , hand out and hand out.
Nah… claiming lack of agency in any wrong is a classic Indian trope.
Socialism is convenient for mediocre Indian Americans just like pulling out woke/race-card is convenient for Miss XYZ Mukherjee whose parents usually turn out to be La-martinere-educated-bhadralok-brahmin-neurosurgeons from Alipore, Kolkata who came to America and not Argentina because… MONEY.

tamil nadu has now appointed a economic advisory committee, with all the usual non business friendly, pro handout economists. it will be very difficult for them to introduce any more handouts as the state is a king among all in this field. i think there are no items to be given as handouts except the tasmac product.
I disagree with Delhi and Maharashtra case. The GSDP of Maharashtra is $400 billion out of which Mumbai Municipal area accounts for $280 billion. The horrific Gini coefficient if calculated will be of Maharashtra. 25 million people amassing 70% of wealth in the state of 120 million. Similar thing is for West Bengal though even more horrific Gini coefficient where Calcutta accounts for over 70% of wealth. Tamil Nadu i always admire, even though the Tamil Nadu Government inherited Madras presidency region, there is an industrial belt which goes from Coimbatore down to Tuticorin which gives better economic distribution. If India wants to grow, it needs to follow the economic model of Tamil Nadu (Dravidian model, If i may) for prosperous society not Delhi or Maharashtrian model.
That way Gujarat is the model to follow. It not only has industries distributed across the state but also has multiple large liveable cities like Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Baroda, Surat, Rajkot, Jamnagar etc.
I don’t think any other state has so many decent cities.
TBH after what Mamta di has been doing, even some of my commie friends have started to sympathize with my assertion that “Mamta is no better than Modi”.
Never expected this day would come. Now only for the New York Times to reach Kolkata.
What will be the political impact of some BJP leaders calling for a partition of West Bengal?
The demand will allow the Trinamool to further press home its Bengali identity plank but will also help the BJP consolidate its hold on the north.
“For a brief period in April and May, many in the Hindu middle class spoke of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as though it was the Congress party. As in, they used language they usually employ in road rage. They were not only Hindus, but Hindus who were economically ascendant, optimistic and culturally secure in their environment—the core base of the BJP. In homes and on the streets, people blamed the ruling party and its leadership for thousands of deaths in the second wave of the pandemic. Rough words were used, some on camera.
Almost all parties can be accused of corruption, communalism, violence and harbouring criminals. Yet, they are separated by what accusations stick on and damage them, and what never do. Charges of corruption and inefficiency tend to stick to the Congress, even though all parties can be accused of those. Charges of “communalism” and authoritarian disrespect for freedom of expression tend to stick to the BJP, even though it is laughable to assume other Indian parties are not guilty of those. Charges of anti-business practices and pandering to the poor stick to communist parties, even though there is no single region in India where a small entrepreneur or major corporation would claim things are easy for them or efficient. And, of course, the charge of “anarchy” sticks to the Aam Aadmi Party, and the way some of the business elite make this accusation, you would think they are used to Scandinavian standards of governance.
Political parties are also differentiated by what never sticks to them, what causes no electoral damage regardless of the validity of the charges. Broadly, communalism does not stick to the Congress, even though its individuals have faced serious charges of violent communal politics. Corruption does not stick to the BJP or AAP. Also, accusations of impeding economic growth rarely seem to affect any party in Tamil Nadu or Kerala.”
“The data analysed by Paul and Sridhar show that there are two areas in which the South has done much better than the North. First, with regard to human development indicators such as female literacy rate, infant mortality and life expectancy. Second, in areas critical to economic development such as technical education, electricity generation, and quality and extent of roads.”
If India wants to grow, it needs to follow the economic model of Tamil Nadu (Dravidian model, If i may) for prosperous society not Delhi or Maharashtrian model.
I saw the above comment from Shashank and also the replies of Saurav and Prats. If we have to talk about economic model, we need to talk about the “political economy” underlying that model and how political society adheres to the continued patronage of a specific economic model. By society – here we imply the elites or more specifically, in the Indian context, vote-blocs that ensure sustenance of the political economy.
The first pillar of any Indian state “political economy” are the dominant castes. They will make or break the state’s fortunes. Getting the right combination is 50% of the fight. TN got this squared away at the very beginning – like a glove exactly measured to itś hand.
The Dravidian revolution is very traditional, in the sense that, it restored the OBCś to the ruling forefront and made them comfortable with decision making. If you view West Bengal through this prism, then you will understand why the state’s decline to a pitiful pauper from being Lee Yuan Kew’s idol – the dominance of the upper caste Bhadraloks at the cost of the OBCs.
The next thing – they did was to absolutely and ruthlessly pacify the non-Hindu and intellectual segments through a cunning secularization of Hindu linguistic and historic heroes like Tiruvalluvar, Rajaraja Chola I etc. TN does not waste even 1% of its political energies fighting the minorities or the westernized elites of its society. A deracinated English speaking elite in TN is called “Peter Udrathu” in popular lexicon. Notice the religious angle in the derision.
Folks like Saurav do not read vernacular media and they do not understand anything at all about the Dravidian dynamics wrt minorities. To understand a society, you need to watch its native political language.
In cultural and formal Tamil discourse, the name of Mo is Nabigal Nayagam (it has a separate history). You are not allowed to call Mo, Mo in standard Tamil political discourse. One of the most right wing Dravidian parties (NTK) demands that Tamil Muslims adopt Tamil cultural names or be disqualified for political office. Murugan (Kartikeya) is a perfect Tamil cultural name, in their opinion 🙂 You know where this is leading.
Contrast this with UP or Bihar – the most Arabized states of India. Muslims there even treat Deoband and its utterances as an extra-constitutional authority. Such a thing is even unthinkable within the Dravidian schema. Murugan disapproves!!
In the same vein, they have pacified all other real or imaginary opponents – communists, the diaspora – with an imaginative umbrella of cultural jingoism. This is an marvellous example how political Hinduism should engage with modernity in a sustained fashion.
While they were doing that, they achieved three successful moon-shots in the economic field with zero political opposition. Remember they crushed all societal or intellectual opponents.
Universal mid-day meal scheme at primary schools (Kamaraj in 1960s)
Simultaneous mushrooming of diploma & engineering colleges (MGR in 1980s)
Rapid urbanization by giving freebies like houses, laptops, grinders, TVs (MK in 1980s and 90s)
None of them were thinking about an end-result – but it built up to an extremely durable industrial culture. Nearly everyone in TN understands modernity in Tamil terms – not with a reference to the culture of America or Canada or Arabia.
For UP and Bihar to become modern industrial societies, they need to first exhibit alpha dominance in cultural terms, bring their minorities in line and elevate the OBCś into power. Its time to shake off that thousand year lethargy to build a political Kultur first. Sustainable economics will follow.
The only people who think that Tamil Nadu is more Hindu than supposedly Arabized Northen states are Tamil upper castes and their disapora. Though i do appreciate the
tribulation and circumvention one goes thru to write the mumbo jumbo 2 somehow establish the opposite.
Upper castes???? The Dravidian movement is an OBC project that is now in its 7th decade. You are really clueless.
Gangetic OBCs have wilfully trained themselves to pretend that Arabisation is a perfectly normal Bhumiputra phenomenon. This in a nutshell encapsulates the dysfunctional political economies of the Gangetic Belt. There is no common cultural tree to pray to. Gangetic OBCs have forgotten how to create empires and subdue opponents.
Joke is that they no longer recognise cultural success even when they see it.
Both UP and Bihar have largely been ruled by OBC leaders for the last 30 years.
Yet the TN model is difficult to apply to these states because both UCs and Muslims are present there in substantial numbers and often with on ground enforcement capabilities.
We’ll have to find a different way to focus our energies.
…both UCs and Muslims are present there in substantial numbers and often with on ground enforcement capabilities..
Agree with that statement. It is pragmatic. But that is the lay of the land – equivalent example would be Malaysia – where 32% of the population is non-Muslim and non-Malay. Yet they persisted with the Bhumiputra concept in constitutional law and have created a fertile ground for societal advancement.
Every multi-ethnic multi-religious Asian country that has advanced has pacified its minorities by hook or crook – Singapore (15% Islam), Malaysia. TN falls there in that sense – because while they have championed social justice – they have actually done very little for Dalits or Muslims. Yes – a Tamil Dalit or Muslim is much more economically advanced and less prone to violence – but they have attained this by merging their identities into the Tamil cultural project.
Any Muslim or Dalit resurgence is surgically excised by whichever Dravidian party is in power. So that is where a duopoly helps – their core agenda is the same – only detailing differs.
In that sense, UP and Bihar needs to develop a duopoly of political parties that follow the same core plank agenda. The Yadav/Muslim/Congress combo and Hindutva/JDU are totally at loggerheads – they only subtract from each other when they alternate terms. If such a duopoly materialises, then sustained economic rise will follow.
Saurav is losing his cool with foundational analyses – in his obsession with superficial froth, he totally forgots that Modi totally pacified the Muslim elites (Bohras) of Gujarat. It was done most ruthlessly. They will now be pro-BJP for several generations. The real threat to a continued BJP dominance comes from Patidars. AND most importantly, even if a Patidar led front topples the BJP, they will continue the mercantilist policies while being pro-vegetarian/pro-industry. The Gujarati duopoly is a given!
My best bet is that Akhilesh moves to the Centre. So far he seems to have realised that getting on the Dalit-Leftist train was a mistake. I have great hopes for him. After all, he is a Karnataka huduga!!

Tamil Nadu industrial belt has industry from basic goods to assembly which includes cement, steel, aluminium, textile etc while Delhi Ncr has assembly line production industries, kind of secondary industries which produces high value goods. As a rule of economics the more basic good industry the more is the employment, the more the high value industry, the lesser is the employment.
Stock footage of Sanjay Gandhi’s campaign for the 1980 General Elections to wrest back power from Janata Party after the Emergency debacle in 1977. Congress lost its hold on power for the first time in 3 decades to a coalition who ousted Indira Gandhi.
In the clips, he campaigns in Meerut, Modinagar and perhaps in another unknown town. He is impressively competent in addressing the audience. Very suave, slow and making them understand. He tells them not to vote for a coalition and stresses only a single party majority can deliver a stable government. He talks about the failure of the JP Govt to procure sugar at the MSP and their general cluelessness at governance. He says its easy to agitate but tough to govern!! He makes very reasoned arguments to convince the audience to bring back the Congress to power.
Indians from that era (40 years ago) are very rapt, disciplined and attentive. You can just see the concentration on their faces when they are listening. Another thing – they are well groomed, wearing clean whites and looking competent. Just a different world!

Its a good development. Only when the subaltern sees that their elite dont stand for them, will they realize that all this liberal ‘we stand with subalterns’ and ‘our culture is best’ nonsense will die.
Under Art 124(4) of the Constitution, the judge of a Supreme court can be removed by the Parliament on the grounds of incapacity. These judges are eligible for removal now. But useless BJP will not initiate any such proceeding. If a judge is unable to hear on issues concerning their state then it’s incapacity. Useless judges.

Old gentleman from UP who emigrated to the US talks to his son about racism in the US.
“I feel that people in India and other places they have they have more racism”
Something big changes between first and second generation Indian Americans. Maybe people forget the shit their parents had to wade through. Or maybe parents were just opportunistic-ambitious social climbers who have raised children who opportunistically play the race card to get ahead when cornered or stagnant.
UCs and OBCs from India have no standing to play the race card on Gora people.
I saw the interview. It’s interesting that he still speaks with such a UP accent. I thought three decades would have been enough to acquire an American accent.
UCs and OBCs from India have no standing to play the race card on Gora people.
I have not really heard of systemic racism from any of my friends in the US. But most work in tech or finance and are well off. One time I remember a friend mentioning that a black guy came up to him on a bus and spit on his face. This must have been in Pittsburgh some 4-5 years ago if my memory serves right. But no other overt racist incidents either.
One woke girl I met via a dating did complain a lot about how Indians are not given their due in corporate America. She had left New York Times to move back to India because she felt marginalised or something. I was initially sympathetic but then I changed my mind after actually reading her articles.
I dont see how anyone finds him funny. I think he is only famous because he talks about political stuff. Most of his “jokes” are just him criticizing modi supporters while speaking in a weird accent
I don’t think he’s popular outside of a small pocket in SoBo and South Delhi. Can’t take that article seriously after they call him ‘enormously popular’.
There are more interesting people around like Varun Grover who can make the same point but funnier.
I once saw a reddit post by a (young and fit) anonymous Indian lady with her very explicit nudes as a tribute/offering/thank-you/idk to Kunal Kamra when he had the Airplane fracas with Arnab Goswami. She must have been a slut but maybe it shows that Kunal Kamra has cred in a certain (affluent?) crowd.
On Grover, i think he is just an earthy version of Kamra.
TBH any criticism/joke on Modi is affected by this major drawback that the stand up comic has no foil to contrast it with. Earlier it was Trump, and Modi came across as a statesman. Now its mostly Rahul or Mamta and there too the other come out worse than Modi, so it affects the joke.

I have not kept up with the 5G news. Apparently a lot has been going on. Thanks for the post!

@Prats
Thanks for the thoughtful comments.
My only complaint was that the report didn’t focus much on bicycling, but there’s room for improvement in subsequent editions.
https://scroll.in/article/997960/ramachandra-guha-south-india-counts-for-too-little-in-national-politics-and-diminish-even-further
This surprised me:
Plus, the Indian state never shies away from violence.

TN knows that a decent amount of industries will keep coming to them, just like Ola decided to set up their plant.
If and when the northern states clean up their act, things will become more interesting. Real competition.
Yeah . Bit like Maharastra and Delhi. It really doesn’t matter who governs the state
I disagree with Delhi and Maharashtra case.
Why and how is Tamil Nadu’s industrial region any different from Delhi-NCR belt ?
That way Gujarat is the model to follow. It not only has industries distributed across the state but also has multiple large liveable cities like Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Baroda, Surat, Rajkot, Jamnagar etc.
I don’t think any other state has so many decent cities.
But Fascists live there, who wants to live with Fascist?

Classic
Lol you seem to believe his theory.
Guess a state which has been led by OBC multiple times, has high UC pops and spends inordinate amounts of energy attacking its Muslim pops?
Gujarat. How is it doing economically?
Lol. Everybody and his uncle now has a theory.
@Prats

*enormously popular comedian.
This makes me curious and not in all the right ways.

I am waiting for the day when Bhadralok people will be made to bend their knee and suck up by writing silly books about their new reality like what the self-anointed ‘elite’ lefties in Delhi have been reduced to. In the mean time:

I don’t want to say it but Mamata is not going easily. And this stupid ” Nobel prize aspiring PM” won’t do shit. Mamata knows BJP is shit that’s why she is doing it.

Oxygen demand in Delhi exaggerated as per SC panel.
We need responsible duopoly in the north otherwise nothing will prevent things going down the drain.
