Open Thread + A Note on Standards

Brown Pundits has always been a forum for the kind of thinking that most outlets are too timid or too tribal to publish. We intend to keep it that way. But that standard cuts both ways, and we are raising it.

Effective immediately, the moderation policy is zero tolerance.

This is not a crackdown on opinion. We welcome disagreement; sharp, even uncomfortable disagreement. What we will no longer tolerate is noise dressed up as insight.

What does noise look like? You know it when you read it. It is the rattling of nuclear talking points that have not been updated since 1998. It is the reduction of a civilisation of 220 million people, or of a billion-and-a-half, to a single variable: the Crescent, or the Saffron. It is venom without weight, and venting without argument.

Pakistan is complex. India is complex. Every human society is, at its foundation, irreducibly complex.

Any comment that treats either as otherwise will be moderated; sometimes publicly, sometimes silently. We apply the sniff test: does it smell right, given the context? Given how tight our Editorship and Commentariat is, we will be judicious, as we have always been; for instance the Precedent post on the controversial Dhuruandar sequel remains Gaurav Lele’s.

This applies to both sides of every line we cover; geographical, civilisational, sectarian, or political.

We are not asking for bookishness. We are not asking for academic caution or diplomatic hedging. We are asking for the one thing that separates a pundit from a troll: considered thought. If you are going to cast aspersions, earn them. Make the case. Bring the weight. If you cannot, do not post.

We have a large and growing commentariat. That is something to be proud of. It is also a responsibility; to each other, and to the readers who come here because they expect better than what they can find elsewhere.

We expect better. We will enforce it.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

— The Editors, Brown Pundits

PS: A note on our most regular commentators specifically: moderation works differently for those who should know better. BB has been asked to take an extended hiatus for the weekend. Before posting or commenting again, he is requested to email the editors first. Kabir is now on notice: when fishy comments appear, contact us directly rather than reverting with nuclear rattling. Everyone knows Pakistan is a nuclear power. Repeating it as a threat, or engaging with those who do, is irresponsible and no longer acceptable here. We expect our regulars to model the standard, not test it.

Unhappily many Americans have been fed propaganda on the Axis of Evil, by Bush, Obama. So many for the most part agree with this war. (Note there no protests like against the Vietnam war, just half hearted No Kings Protests)

===============================

It turns out that the speech was sort of an anticlimax, although not in a good way. Many people expected Trump to pull the mother of all TACOs, to declare victory and surrender. He did not do that. He declared victory, of course, but he did not actually announce an end to hostilities. On the contrary, he said we’re going to bomb Iran into the Stone Age. So add massive war crimes to your schedule.

There is clearly no strategy here. There’s no endgame. There’s nothing. It’s hard to tell, as always, whether Trump is delusional or just completely unable to admit something that he actually knows.

One of the moments that really struck me in the speech was him (Trump) declaring that the whole world was extremely impressed by what happened…

What it’s seeing is that the world’s greatest military power took on a fourth-rate power. Again, as I said the other day, Iran’s military budget is a rounding error in our military budget. And we lost….

But Trump has to believe or has to claim that he believes that the whole world is extremely impressed. You might say, why do we care? Well, he cares, obviously. His whole thing is about dominance and believing that we’ve got the world awed by our strength.

I have to keep hammering on the point that the US despite its huge military spending is not the world’s greatest military power. Russia is. Not only are vast swathes of our spending wasteful to unproductive (we actually tout the terrible F-35!) but our military is optimize for short wars against insurgents. And even then, the Houthis bested us. Can we please drop the bogus chest-beating about our Wizard of Oz military show?

Well this guy (?) says 80% of Pakistan is gay and the rest bisexual.
Even if 50% of what happened says is true, it is quite a liberal society.

I don’t know where he is getting 80% from.

Bisexuality is quite common among Pakistani men. Some of this is due to lack of easy access to women. There is no dating culture, especially in more conservative areas. Some of it is due to preferences. Generally only the partner who plays the “female” role is stigmatized.

Homosexual behavior is haraam according to Sharia. Only sex within marriage is halal.

Pakistan still has Section 377 on the books. But of course it is very difficult to enforce this law since most people have sex in private spaces where there are no witnesses.

If you are actually interested, I wrote a review of Komail Aijazuddin’s memoir “Manboobs”. He’s Pakistani-American but the book describes his experiences growing up in Pakistan. Of course, he comes from quite a privileged background.

Prime Minister Modi put himself at the centre of India’s foreign policy. Now the joke is on him

The conflict in West Asia was, in his assessment, making many Indians, who believed that the country’s global stature had risen under Modi, question the “Vishwaguru” narrative.

IRAN JUST RELEASED A TARGET LIST OF 8 BRIDGES ACROSS 4 COUNTRIES. THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING.

Sheikh Jaber Al Ahmad Al Sabah Bridge — TARGETED.
36 km over water. Kuwait’s northern lifeline. No alternative route
.
King Fahd Causeway — TARGETED.
ONLY road between Saudi Arabia and Bahrain. US Fifth Fleet logistics depend on it.

Sheikh Zayed Bridge — TARGETED.
1 of 3 links to Abu Dhabi island.

Al Maqta Bridge — TARGETED.
2 of 3 links to Abu Dhabi island.

Sheikh Khalifa Bridge — TARGETED.
3 of 3 links to Abu Dhabi island. ALL exits named.

King Hussein Bridge — TARGETED.
Jordan’s primary West Bank crossing.

Damia Bridge — TARGETED.
Jordan’s secondary crossing.

Abdoun Bridge — TARGETED.
Amman’s central traffic artery.

8 bridges. 4 countries. ZERO redundancy. ZERO bridge defense doctrine.

None of these bridges have alternatives. Zero redundancy. One strike = total isolation.

These bridges took YEARS to build and cost BILLIONS. They cannot be rebuilt during a conflict.
The real crisis hasn’t even started yet.

Phyecho1: To Mr Omarali, I just wanted to show gratitude. Thats all, I have evolved politically, When i was young i was a liberal, later on became conservative, this very much coincided with unknown illness,My illness is done but this has completely changed my politics. I am least bothered by hindutva crap. I am done with that part, I cant reclaim my liberalism unfortunately due to garbage i fed myself, But I have grown significantly smarter and coincides with an inclination for prosperity above all crap. I had no idea that politics is downstream of IQ.I disown all that I have written here.Thank you.

UAE calling in Pakistan’s debt during a fast-snowballing energy crisis was not in anybody’s bingo cards. Certainly not those who were getting prematurely excited about Pakistani diplomatic ‘victories’ in recent times.

This is why one shouldn’t extrapolate too fancifully off of vague diplomatese.

I don’t think 3 billion dollars is an amount that would ‘trouble’ the UAE, but can’t say the same about Pakistan…

there are reports that saudi is giving Pakistan a 5 billion back up. so that makes is a profitable transaction for Pakistan.

Iran has doubted Pakistan’s neutrality and safety of its delegation, and has demanded a new venue for the negotiations.

“Islamia College, Peshawar–1937-1941”

https://thepeshawarreview.substack.com/p/islamia-college-peshawar-1937-1941

Excerpts from the unpublished memoir of Ghulam Mustafa Sardar–a close friend of my paternal grandfather– originally written in Urdu and translated into English by my father.

These excerpts discuss the visit to the college by Pandit Nehru and also representatives of the Nizam of Hyderabad.
