Love Jihad Zohran

Congrats to Furan who was mentioned in this Five lessons for India’s Opposition from Zohran Mamdani’s triumph.

Born a Shia Muslim, he spoke to the Indian Eye of being raised in an interfaith family. “My mother’s side of the family is Hindu” he said, “and I grew up celebrating Diwali, Holi and Raksha Bandhan. Though I identify as Muslim, these Hindu traditions and practices have shaped my worldview
” His mother named him Zohran, which means the first star in the sky.

Zohran does seem to be a product of Love Jihad.

Such a…..provocative term that is. “protect our women from the covetous gaze of the other” is a notion often abused by the bigoted. The KKK lynched so many black men in the early 20th century under such false accusations.

And to be fair, inter-faith marriage and couplings face similar outrage and resistance in the opposite direction as well, with honor killings and the like.

Tragic really. Urbanization, Education are forces that ‘push’ increasingly progressive modernity on the sub-continent. But its an iterative, slow-moving, almost generational process.

In Zohran’s case though, he’s a child of a very globalized elite diaspora – one that almost inhabits a different country of their own, no?

Honestly one can argue that a lot of religion is performative anyway.

Zohran seems to have good intentions – I do have very serious doubts about his electoral promises and policy viability. NYC post-covid is facing a slow-motion crisis of Hindenburg proportions. Affordability is of course important, but the hollowing out of white collar employment is killing the city like the proverbial frog.

Hopefully he demonstrates similar pragmatism in fiscal policy-making at a level that he showed during his adeptly marshaled campaign.

Bottomline, I like the dude. He seems genuine. Lets hope for the best.

>I don’t know why the Print is celebrating this

Indian media orgs are trained and conditioned to recognize the value in stories of diaspora success. Incentives drive coverage. No?

On the flip side I am seeing a lot of anti Muslim/Sharia Law type YouTube and FaceBook reels on my feed.
If it is White folks possibly Genuine.
But many by “mid easterners” like Syrians and Egyptians
Even more by African Americans, who are for the most part not overtly Anti Muslim (many have relatives/friends who are Black Muslim**

So my suspicious mind says, they are being paid by Zionists to halt the trend among the younger generation to vote for Pro Palestine politicians.

In fact XTM I see your post and comment “Zohran does seem to be a product of Love Jihad” as part of the Zionist propaganda

**Nation of Islam is very active in US Prisons. They have been responsible for rehabilitating many from Drug Addiction etc.

“Love Jihad” is a problematic term. It’s actually very Islamophobic.

Presumably, Mira Nair was OK with having her child raised Muslim. She and her husband must have discussed this prior to having a child.

In any case, according to Islam, the child of a Muslim father is Muslim no matter the religion of the mother. Also, a Muslim man can only marry a “person of the book” without the woman converting to Islam. That is if one wants a religious marriage.

I think it is very offensive to assume that Mahmood Mamdani and Mira Nair don’t really love each other. The term “Love Jihad” implies deceit. These are two adults who must have talked about what their expectations for marriage were before entering into it. We should not be judging anyone’s personal lives.

Why is it such an issue that Zohran identifies as a Muslim? He doesn’t have any issues with his mother’s religion. He has been consistent about advocating for a secular and multicultural India.

In Christianity (Catholic and Protestant) one cannot be married in Church and be registered in Church Records unless both are Christians. So the non Christian has to convert and be Baptized**.

It is a big deal because in death you cannot be buried in a Church cemetery unless a Baptized Christian. That also means you cannot go to heaven (or hell) . One of the reasons many religious Christians and Muslims dont want to be cremated.

I would assume the Bahais too do NOT want be Cremated. You can correct me.

** This became a issue for me when I entered school. The school wanted a Baptismal Certificate. Evangelical Christians only do DEDICATION just after birth. So my Father and I went to Kandy (where I was Dedicated) and got a long letter from the Pastor. Sister Hutchins an Englishwoman who kissed with a big noise.

I had a couple of female cousins who married Buddhists. Not just Religious differences, cultural too, Jaffna Tamil and Sinhalese. They not very religious, but wanted a fancy wedding in a big Church. So the poor to be husband had to go for study etc and proclaim to be Christian. I think they had to undergo Baptism too

So XTM why dont you call Christians who marry Buddhists or Hindus Love Jihad.
So XTM did you have a Hindu Ceremony when you married your wife. Does Bahai allow you to marry a non Bahai without their converting?

I finally got around to reading the Mandir article.
I was struck by a few sentences

Could he (Rahul Gandhi) say something like: “My mother was raised Catholic. My father was half Parsi, half Hindu. I therefore am proud to contain within my own family history the kind of religious diversity that is India’s finest civilisational legacy.”

Why instead does he (Rahul Gandhi) lay claim to be a “jenuedhari Brahmin”, namely a Brahmin who wears a jenue or sacred thread? A jenue is worn after an initiation ceremony for which only “dwija” or “twice-born” Hindus, or in other words caste-Hindus, are eligible. This identity by contrast excludes not just people of non-Hindu faiths like Christians and Muslims, but also Dalits and Adivasis.

India has travelled a long way from the time it was a leading champion of Palestinian rights. Today it is one of the few countries in the global south that is a frontline ally of Israel.

Just keep in mind Judaism and Zionism too exclude those who are not Jews. In the Torah the concept of the Chosen People is no different from Hindu “dwija” or “twice-born”
