Episode 9: South India from 500-1100 AD

Another Browncast is up. You can listen on LibsynAppleSpotify, and Stitcher (and a variety of other platforms). Probably the easiest way to keep up the podcast since we don’t have a regular schedule is to subscribe to one of the links above!

The history podcast returns to South India. Shrikanth and Mukunda are in conversation with Maneesh, on all things South of Vindhyas from 500-1000 AD. We talk about Chalukyas, Pallavas, Rashtrakutas, Cholas and more. The episode covers the political and cultural history of the period in great detail.  A pivotal figure in sub-continents history- Shankaracharya makes and appearance. As do some of the landmark temples and king’s whose legacy survives to this day.

It may help for the hosts to identify their educational background on these topics given they are attempting to present a history of a wide variety of regions, cultures, and empires and seem to frequently present a lot of statements as fact without any real references.

This episode was great! I would love an episode about Shankara and the acharyas that came afterwards! And also the institutions that came up and how that led to the continuity of Hinduism till today. Also maybe an episode on the bhakti movement over the years.

We did discuss Chalukyas of Vengi, Cheraman Perumal dynasty

If you mean Telugu / Malayalam literatures, they are mostly outside the purview of this episode. Though we could’ve mentioned Nanayya who is at the tail end of this period

Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t Tamil and Malayalam only diverge into distinct languages after about 1000 AD? For most of the period the episode is talking about, they were a single ethnolinguistic group, so “Tamil” would cover both areas.

I personally feel a gratitude for Adi Shankraacharya who relieved Bharata from clutches of Buddhism which was making it Inactive and defenseless. Without him hinduism wouldnot have survived

In the episode they say that it was already waning and that this view is some kind of a misconception.
